An Army Veteran and a German Girl .... Building up our self-sufficient life one step at a time.
We've been saving up for years and planning for our move back into the country. In March 2020 we took the leap and relocated to our 20 acres of oak trees lost in the pines of Florida's panhandle and left the city life we had lived for 7 years behind.
On our channel we document the journey of arriving at our piece of land and building everything up from scratch, with all the learning that comes with "on-the-job" training. From building infrastructure, over animal husbandry and gardening, we are doing it all and taking you along with us in our videos.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!

My garden is a DISASTER! | Florida Summer Garden Tour | The Neglect Project
Hello there from central CA.. getn Anatolian pup in few weeks .. it'll grow up in few hundred acres farm also had a great Pyrenees in past..where in middle east did u come from? Also ethnicity of ur wife always find people's heritage an background fascinating..thanks for doin what u do
I don't know what everone is talking about. If you can pick your rooster up... he's fine. Mine is 4 foot tall and 350 pounds. He's at the door as soon as I come to the pen. If I don't have food in my hand, he starts eating me and knocking me over. There is no grabbing him or picking him up. He's so mean I have to use the men of the house to draw attention away from me while I sneak in and try to grab the eggs. He did kill a hawk that got in tho, the only reason we let him live.
RECIPE AMOUNTS??
Aww, the fine smell of burning bone.
Does it need to be in a cool dark place during the fermenting process? Or can it be done in the light on your kitchen counter?
I've done it both ways and it's done best with a slow ferment in the fridge
Do what????
It's in the video description, but here you go: - Expose to livestock early and observe behavior. Correct as needed. - If an older "mentor" LGD is on site, be sure to introduce them early. This will help establish order and expectations. - Socialize them - Establish routine (food, water, praise, corrections) - Get them used to being handled. (Baths, grooming, health checks, vaccinations, routine maintenance, etc.) - If you will need to transport your dog frequently, assure to kennel and car ride train them

These guys are great, what a great Dad... and yup the son too! We raised 2 boys on hobby farms throughout the south, I often say in these days long gone by, "I'd trade a thousand tomorrows for one more day on a hobby farm with our 2 boys". 23 yr Naval Aviation Vet... Aircrew.
How long it take for concrete to set up? Looks like you were ok to level it
Is this the same dog as a Kangel?
When trying to post a catch and clean video...make sure you have a sharp knife...
Love your channel. we have two Anatolians What do you think about our dogs? ua-cam.com/channels/q_Gc5DETrOT22TF_jV_dWQ.html
Another high-falutent homesteading channel. Any channels out there that a normal low-income person like me could watch? So many impractical setups for the average joe like me.
NIGHT SHOT WOULDVE BEEN NICE
Thank you for the info but I couldn’t help but noticed you had a black and blue eye😮. Hope you’re doing well
Congratulations for making the right choice for your homestead. Kangals are really not only very effective shepherd dogs but they are also very loyal and affectionate. They are very protective of their own environment. Based on my experience with my Kangal I can say that they know when to alert you rather than barking at every sound they hear. They are not aggressive in general, and they act when they have to. Good choice; enjoy their company.
You can see the evil in his eyes brother!! hahahaha Hope he worked out for you! I've got 9 roosters total, about half up and coming and a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes. But I've got some awesome boys. Got them working in pairs and they do such a great job. Just recently got one back from the dark side after battling with him for close to a year. Much of the help turning him came from his big brother and top dawg in the hen yard. Rooty boy had my six with Chester no doubt. Don't always work out though. Some of those boys are just possessed with a mean spirit, not only with people but with their birds too.
Queen Anne lace or some call it cow itch cause if you get it on you it will cause a rash and itch so bad
i have two armenian gamprs, these are very similar to the anatolian shepherds (basically the same)... these ancient breeds are the best naturally best behaved dogs to have
Great information and you know what you are. So many people don't read up on breeds and then get rid of them and blame it on the dogs. I read up on all the dogs breeds of the world. and it's amazing what you learned about them. and i also watch videos of breeds so i know what to expect. Well done Great video 😊UK 🇬🇧.
Our Anatoluan was able to alert us to a rattlesnake we were then able to dispatch. Smart calm dogs.
This looks amazing! Is there any reason we can't trim the needles off the tree (and cut off the unused woody part of the end of the needle) before washing? I am just thinking about saving steps. Thanks for sharing your process and recipe!!
Just got one and waiting for the cement to dry.
Yeay
And if you don't have animals then you and your family become the 'herd' They will always get between you (their herd) and potential threat avenues. And yes, they bark all night protecting you. And no, they don't listen unless, as you've pointed out the either were going to do that already of it makes sence to them. Other than that you may 'suggest' but order?!.....LOL......Just 'ain't' gunna happen! Great, great, great friends and protectors to have if you let them be who they were born to be. 5,000 to 6,000 years of breeding says it all.
Exactly
Where’s the recipe? Was the point to say that u have a recipe but won’t share it? What does anyone gain from watching this?
Maybe tey the description for full recipe and instructions? Just an idea...
Pointless video
Glad you enjoyed
Anatolian Shepherd and Kangal are 2 different breeds. As in alaskan malamute, alaskan husky and siberian husky are being different breeds.
Exactly. However, the AKC bands them together under the umbrella of Anatolian Shepherds
Great video, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed
Best? Serious 😅 you never seen abiriginal Kavskiuri Nagazi.
K bud
Sure havent
Lovely!
Wonderful dogs
Good God!!! That's the stuff of nightmares. First thing I think of is "oooh. Dinner."
Lol
Totally agree! But, as you say, not awesone. You have beautiful, Anatolian lines, & toss a Pyrenees in? You stated you don't monitor them, while in heat? I hope it works for you. Thank you, for your service! Beautiful, Anatolians!
Well said!
They only dog that killed a lion before they Come to turkiye. The dog was gif from a indian Prince to a turkish sultan .
Interesting
Lol watching this video makes me laugh. I rescued brother and sister anatolia/merema sheepdog(cousin too the pyrenese) ... but I got no livestock!
Thats great. Glad you rescued them. They're bred for a purpose and that's what they're happiest with. Can they work out in different environments? Absolutely. But any owner of such breeds needs to be aware of their purpose and characteristics in order to assure health as well as assuring they dont get out of control. Which is why these dogs end up as rescues in.the first place. Non fit owners and irresponsible owners
@HiddenOaksHomestead aaah. Thank you for that reassurance. They have been socially involved with dogs and people. I am working on an area on the back where i can limit that interaction. It's been a process but it's always ongoing. Being in a city environment, would you be able to give me any advice on the next steps?
In Romania we call this Socata.
😁
I have an anatolian/german pyrenees mix and he is such a good boy, he is very nice with my chickens and cats, between him and my huskamute he is the more talkative one, but they keep each other busy and the Huska-mute is part wolf so he teaches him things so its pretty easy to take care of them. Anytime one of them need something my Shepnees dog will tell me about it and my huskamute will always keep him from being too rambunctious by playing with him and tiring him out
🤯
I prefer maremme dog because it only barks when there is a threat and it does not have a tendency to wander, so the risk to loose it is low.
Anatolian also only bark when there's a threat. We haven't had issues with wandering either, but it tends to be ver individualistic
@@HiddenOaksHomestead You are right that it is an individual matter but in general, according to different sources, the maremme dog would be the LGD that barks the less and wander the less in general.
What is the shelf life of the herbs
If dehydrated and stored correctly, multiple years
They're so beautiful ❤
So glad you’re getting things all figured out so when I retire in a year and move back I will know when to plant things! Have you tried the Sweet 100 Cherry Tomatoes there? I absolutely love them and they do so well for me in OK. I would love to know the dates when you plant things.
Cherry varieties do well. Larger tomatoes I've had issues with due to temp, humidity and bug pressure
I'm looking to harvest some pine needles for tea at my parents place, I just want to make sure they're the right kind and safe.
Yews and ponderosa pine are poisonous
good instructional video, and I love the interaction at the end, we don't get enough of that.....thank you for supporting the veterans, Peace, USAF veteran...(what else is there to say? YEP!!!)
Thanks for your support
my grumpy my great pyrenees with a beauthiful badger face is my favorite dog
They're great!
But why are they better then the Great Pyrenees? The descriptions of the Anatolian don’t sound very different from how people describe the Great Pyrenees.
Anatolians are bred to be more self suffand to make their own decisions. The GP tends to rely on their humans more. At least in our experience
I make pine needle baskets - what a lovely inventory of beautiful needles you have. I find making them so meditative and rewarding ❤️ I also make tinctures and will start one going right away! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge ❤️
I've been looking at starting to make baskets. I love that you do!
We have 2 Kangels. Older female and a male she adopted as a puppy. It was lucky. Love these beasts, but keep them out of the living room.
For sure
Can you recommend any good books? Ive got a decent garden started but idk about apothecary stuf
Mine is about to come out stan.store/HiddenOaks
The 100 mph wind rating scares me. I live in the mountains and we get bad storms and the wind exceeds100 sometimes.
We bring it down for high winds
Can't imagine taking an Anatolian to a dog park as that's directly out of line with what they are
